Rio de Janeiro has a pleasant problem: its two most famous landmarks, Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, are far apart. Climb one and you see the other in the distance, almost always looking down on the city. So every visitor ends up asking: is there anywhere you can see both together, in the same frame? There is — and it is on the other side of Guanabara Bay.

Why the best view of Rio is not inside Rio

It sounds counter-intuitive until you think about framing. Standing inside the city, you are always too close to one landmark and too far from the other. It is like trying to photograph a whole building while leaning against its wall.

From Niterói, the neighbouring city, the opposite happens: you are a few kilometres away, with the bay in between, and Rio appears face on, as a complete landscape. Christ the Redeemer on the left, Sugarloaf on the right, the bay below and the mountains closing the background — all in one look. That is why photographers cross the bridge to take the classic shot of the city.

The options compared

OptionWhat you seeHow long
Corcovado (Christ)The city from above, with Sugarloaf in the distanceHalf a day, with queues
Sugarloaf cable carThe bay and the harbour entrance, with Christ in the distanceHalf a day, with queues
HelicopterA flight over the landmarks, through a window7 to 30 minutes
Niterói viewpointsThe whole of Rio face on, for freeAs long as you like
Paragliding in NiteróiThe same frame, in the air and with no window10 to 20 minutes airborne

There is no wrong option here: Corcovado and Sugarloaf are essential visits, and each shows a part of the city. What changes is the perspective. Climbing a landmark means seeing the city from it. Flying in Niterói means seeing the city with the landmark in the picture.

What you see during the flight

The launch is at the Parque da Cidade ramp, on top of Morro da Viração, about 270 metres up. As soon as your feet leave the ground the landscape opens:

  • The whole of Guanabara Bay, with the Rio–Niterói bridge cutting across the water.
  • Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf together, in the same direction of view.
  • Niterói's beaches below you: São Francisco, Charitas and Icaraí.
  • The mountains and Corcovado drawing the background on clear days.

And there is a detail only people who have flown understand: the silence. With no engine and no window, you hear the wind and the instructor's voice, and the city drifts slowly past. The viewpoints of Niterói give you the same framing with your feet on the ground — we gathered them in the best viewpoints in Niterói.

The best time of day for the photo

If the goal is the image, timing matters as much as the place. In the morning, the air is more stable and visibility is usually better, especially in winter, when Rio's sky is dry and clean. Late in the afternoon comes the golden hour: Christ and Sugarloaf gain contrast and the bay reflects the sunset. More in sunset paragliding in Niterói and in the best time of year to fly.

📸 You do not need a camera. Photos and video are included, and because you fly seated with your hands free, you can enjoy the view instead of worrying about equipment.

Getting there from Rio

You do not need to change hotels. From Copacabana you can be at the ramp in about an hour and a half — and the prettiest route does not even use the bridge: the ferry from Praça XV to Charitas crosses the bay with Sugarloaf in front of you, and from there it is a short ride to Parque da Cidade. By car or taxi the route is direct over the Rio–Niterói bridge, depending on traffic. Step by step from each neighbourhood in from Rio's South Zone to Niterói.

What it costs

A tandem paragliding flight in Niterói starts at R$ 379 per person, with 10 to 20 minutes in the air and photos and video included — no separate club fee. For comparison, a helicopter tour over Rio's landmarks usually costs considerably more per person, and you see the city through a window.

Do you need experience?

No. On a tandem flight the instructor is in command and you only need to take a few steps at launch. The weight range runs from about 20 to 110 kg, there is no free fall at any point and the landing is gentle, almost at walking pace. If height worries you, read fear of heights: can you still fly?.
