Of all the slots for a paragliding flight, the late afternoon is the most requested — and it is easy to see why. It is when the light turns golden over Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf and Guanabara Bay, and the whole city across the water becomes a silhouette.

Why the Niterói sunset is special

Niterói has a geographical advantage few places in the world share: it faces Rio de Janeiro. From the top of Parque da Cidade, about 270 metres up, you see Guanabara Bay below and the city on the other side.

In the late afternoon that scene changes character. The sun sets behind Rio — on the opposite side from where you are — so Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf and the mountains become silhouettes against an orange sky.

One caveat: the exact sunset time varies with the season, earlier in winter and later in summer. What does not change is the effect of the last light on the bay.

What the golden hour feels like

People who fly late in the day describe it with the same words: calm, beautiful, moving. The air in the late afternoon is usually more stable than at midday, with less turbulence, which makes the flight smooth.

The low light changes everything. Colours get warmer, shadows stretch and the sea takes on a metallic shine. On a clear day you watch the sun drop slowly behind the mountains of Rio while you glide. The landing is in São Francisco, by the sea, with the instructor flying every turn. It is common for passengers to go quiet in the final minutes and simply look.

Photos and video at sunset

Every tandem flight already includes photos and video at no extra cost — and it is in the late afternoon that those images look their best. A few simple tips:

  • Look at the horizon, not at the camera the whole time. The best sunset shots show you taking in the view, with Christ and Sugarloaf behind.
  • Relax your shoulders and smile for real. The camera is mounted and the instructor handles the framing.
  • Avoid very large sunglasses. In low light you probably will not need them, and photos look better with your face visible.
  • Light or bright colours stand out well against an orange sky.

How the images are taken and delivered is explained in photos and video of your flight.

Securing the prime slot

We operate from 7am to 5pm, so the last flights of the day fall in the late afternoon, when the light is already golden. Because each instructor can only fly a limited number of passengers in that window, places are limited.

  1. Book in advance and say you want the last slot of the day.
  2. Arrive on time. Late in the day there is no margin: the light goes, and the flight has to happen inside the window.
  3. Be flexible. If you can choose between two or three days, your chances of catching a perfect sunset rise sharply.

The tandem flight starts at R$ 379, with CBVL-certified instructors, photos and video included and more than 19 years of experience on the ramp.

An honest caveat: the wind decides

Here is what many operators leave out: we cannot promise there will always be a late-afternoon flight. Paragliding depends on wind direction, strength and consistency. There are days when the wind turns or drops and flying is not possible at that hour.

If that happens, we reschedule at no cost, for another day or another time. We would rather you wait for a good day than fly in doubtful conditions. And there is a real consolation: even without flying, the sunset seen from the Parque da Cidade lookout is one of the best in the state.

For couples and special occasions

It is no accident that the sunset flight is the one couples choose most. Each person flies with an instructor, side by side in the sky, and the photos capture both of you with a golden Rio behind. How it works is explained in paragliding for couples, and if the idea is to give the flight as a gift, see paragliding as a gift.
