Parque da Cidade is the most famous lookout in Niterói — and, for many visitors, the best view of Rio de Janeiro anywhere. From the top of Morro da Viração, about 270 metres up, you get Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay and the ocean beaches in a single sweep. Entry is free.

The view and the lookout

The viewing decks sit a few steps from the parking area, which makes the park unusually accessible for the quality of the view. From there, the whole Rio postcard lines up across the water: the bridge, the downtown skyline, Sugarloaf and, on clear days, Christ the Redeemer clearly visible on the hill opposite.

Paragliding from the ramp

The park's great differentiator is the free-flight ramp. Tandem flights launch from there all year round, so visitors can go from watching the view to being inside it.

  • How it works: you fly attached to a certified instructor who handles everything. Your part is a few steps of running at launch.
  • Duration and price: 10 to 20 minutes in the air, from R$ 379, with photos and video included.
  • Safety and experience: no experience or fitness required; pilots are registered with ANAC (RBAC 103) and certified by the CBVL. More in is paragliding safe?.

Sunset

Late afternoon is when the park fills up, and for good reason: the sun sets behind Rio, turning Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf into silhouettes. Arrive 40 to 60 minutes early for a good spot. The same scene from the air is described in sunset paragliding in Niterói.

Picnics, nature and photos

The green area around the lookout invites you to slow down: bring a snack, have a picnic with a panoramic view and enjoy the forest. It is also one of the best photo spots in the region, with the city as a backdrop at any hour.

Hours, entry and access

The park opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, every day, with free entry. Access is by paved road up Estrada da Viração, with parking near the top — details in how to get to Parque da Cidade.

What to bring

  • Closed, comfortable shoes, especially if you are flying or walking.
  • Sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses — the lookout is open and sunny.
  • Water and a snack, if you fancy a picnic.
  • A light jacket for late afternoon, when the wind picks up at the top.
  • A charged phone or camera, because you will want to record it.
