Paragliding, hang gliding and skydiving get mixed up all the time — but each is a different sport, with its own equipment and its own way of flying. Here is what separates them, and why paragliding is the one most recommended for a first flight.

What a paraglider is

A paraglider is a flexible fabric wing with no rigid structure. It launches from the ground, from a ramp, with the pilot running a few steps. In the air it glides smoothly, using the wind and thermals, which allows long, calm flights. The wing is inflated by the wind itself at launch: air enters through openings at the front and gives shape to the profile, which then works as a real wing. The pilot sits in a comfortable harness.

What a hang glider is

A hang glider has a rigid structure — aluminium tubes in a triangular shape. The pilot flies lying down, steering with body weight against a control bar. It is usually faster and glides further, but it is bigger, heavier and demands a more technical launch and landing.

What a parachute is

A parachute is used in skydiving: you jump from a plane in free fall and then open the canopy to descend safely. Unlike a paraglider, it does not launch from the ground and is not designed to glide for long — the goal is a controlled descent. A jump starts with a climb to 3,000–4,000 metres, followed by roughly 40 to 60 seconds of free fall before the canopy opens.

Which is safer?

The honest answer is that all three are safe when practised with certified equipment, suitable weather and a qualified professional. Risk rarely comes from the sport itself, but from decisions. Among the three, paragliding is the most accessible for beginners, especially in tandem form: speeds are low, launch and landing are gentle, and the passenger is under the command of an experienced instructor the whole time.

Which flies highest and furthest?

For distance and speed, hang gliding has the edge: the rigid profile is more efficient and allows longer glides from the same height. As for altitude, both paragliders and hang gliders can climb in thermals and often get above the launch point. A parachute is the opposite: it starts at the highest point and only descends.

What each one costs

Costs vary a lot by region and structure. In general, a tandem paragliding flight is the most affordable way into free flight, with no investment in a course or equipment: ours starts at R$ 379, including photos and video. Hang gliding tandems are usually similar or slightly higher, while skydiving tends to be the most expensive per jump, because it involves an aircraft.

Where to practise each one in Rio

Rio de Janeiro is one of the best places in the world for free flight, with ramps surrounded by sea and mountains. In Niterói, the Parque da Cidade ramp is a postcard for paragliding, with a view of Guanabara Bay, the ocean beaches and the Rio skyline. For a first flight, Niterói has the advantage of easy access and a calm ramp. The complete overview is in the guide to paragliding in Rio de Janeiro.

Do you need a licence?

It depends on how you fly. For a tandem flight — paragliding, hang gliding or skydiving — the passenger needs no licence. The one who must be qualified is the pilot or instructor. That changes if your goal is to fly solo: then you need a training course and a licence issued by the air-sports bodies.

Which to choose first

If your goal is to fulfil the dream of flying with the least complication, paragliding is the best place to start: gentle launch and landing, low speeds, generous time in the air to enjoy the view and the option of a tandem flight with no experience at all. Hang gliding is excellent for people drawn to speed and to flying prone, and usually makes more sense as a next step. Skydiving is for those who want the intense adrenaline of free fall.
