Straight answer: if your goal is to experience flying once, without becoming a pilot, paragliding is the simpler, more comfortable and easier option to book. Hang gliding is a magnificent sport, but it demands a more technical launch and landing, and in tandem it delivers a different sensation: more speed, less contemplation. Here is how to choose, and where to fly each one in Rio de Janeiro.

The differences that actually matter

Technically, a paraglider is a flexible fabric wing that inflates with the wind, while a hang glider is a rigid wing with an aluminium frame. But for someone flying as a passenger, three differences really count:

  • How you launch: on a paraglider you take a few running steps on your feet, with the wing already open above your head. On a hang glider the run is more committed and the pilot handles a rigid, heavy structure, which requires a narrower window of conditions.
  • How you fly: on a paraglider you sit in a harness, facing the view, with your hands free. On a hang glider you fly prone, horizontally, in a cocoon, with the view partly blocked by the wing itself.
  • How you land: a paraglider lands slowly, almost at walking pace. A hang glider arrives faster and the landing demands more technique.

That is why, in adventure tourism, tandem paragliding has become the standard: it delivers the sensation of flying with the smallest learning curve for someone who is just passing through.

Which is safer?

This is the most common question, and the honest answer is that safety is not in the wing, it is in the operation. Both are considered safe when three things come together: certified, inspected equipment, a qualified pilot and the discipline to fly only in favourable conditions. When one is missing, neither is safe.

What differs is the margin for error at launch and landing. A paraglider is more forgiving: speeds are lower, the landing is slower and the wing can be aborted on the ground if something is not right. A hang glider is faster and less tolerant of a poorly executed launch, which makes it more dependent on the pilot's technique in that instant.

In practice, for you as a passenger, the deciding factor is not the category: it is who you fly with. Checking the pilot's credentials and the age of the equipment matters more than choosing the wing. We cover that in is paragliding safe?.

Where to fly each one in Rio

  • São Conrado, at Pedra Bonita: the most famous ramp, with both paragliding and hang gliding, and a landing on São Conrado beach. It is the cradle of free flight in Rio and an iconic place — and it is also busy.
  • Parque da Cidade, in Niterói: a ramp about 270 metres up, with paragliding. This is where you see the whole of Rio face on: Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf and Guanabara Bay in one frame, which you cannot get flying inside the city itself.

So: if your heart is set on hang gliding, the route is São Conrado. If what you want is the complete view of Rio with the simplest operation, Niterói solves it. We compare both sides in São Conrado or Niterói.

Why paragliding suits a first flight

  1. The launch really is simple. A few steps of running beside the instructor and your feet leave the ground. There is no free fall at any point.
  2. You fly seated, facing the view. The harness is as comfortable as a suspended armchair, so you can look around and talk to the instructor.
  3. Photos and video are included. With your hands free, the record comes naturally.
  4. No experience or fitness required. The range is about 20 to 110 kg and the instructor commands everything. See who can go paragliding.
  5. It is easier to fit into your schedule, because the window of favourable conditions is wider — which matters when you are travelling.

🪂 In practice: a tandem paragliding flight in Niterói starts at R$ 379, lasts 10 to 20 minutes in the air, includes photos and video and is flown by pilots registered with ANAC (RBAC 103) and certified by the CBVL for tandem flights, with insurance included.
