Niterói's ocean region runs east of the city centre and holds some of the finest beaches near Rio de Janeiro: open sea, rocky headlands and, in places, water the colour of the Caribbean. Here is what each one is good for.
Itacoatiara: the most famous
The postcard of the ocean region, framed by two headlands and known for strong, consistent surf. It is beautiful but demanding: the sea is powerful and swimming calls for caution. The Costão de Itacoatiara trail climbs above it and delivers one of the best views in the state — see hiking trails in Niterói.
Camboinhas: calmer water and wide sand
Greenish, generally calmer water and a broad stretch of sand, which makes it the easiest choice for a relaxed day. It sits between the sea and Itaipu lagoon, with a good spread of kiosks and restaurants.
Piratininga: the gateway
The first ocean beach you reach from the centre, long and open, with the lagoon right behind it. Practical for families and popular for stand-up paddle on the lagoon side.
Itaipu: the fishing village
A working fishing beach with boats on the sand and a long history — there is an archaeological museum nearby. The water is usually gentler than Itacoatiara and the atmosphere is more local.
Sossego: the most secluded
Small and reached on foot, which keeps it quieter than the rest. Worth the short walk for anyone looking for calm, but bring what you need: facilities are minimal.
Seeing the beaches from above
From the air the whole coastline lines up at once: the bay on one side, the ocean beaches on the other and Rio across the water. A tandem paragliding flight from Parque da Cidade lasts 10 to 20 minutes and starts at R$ 379, with photos and video included — the view is described in seeing Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf from above.
Getting there
The ocean region is about 30 minutes by car or taxi from central Niterói, with bus routes serving the main beaches. On summer weekends traffic builds, so go early.
Safety and good practice
- Respect the sea: ocean beaches have waves and rip currents. Prefer stretches with lifeguards and watch the flags.
- Check the bathing report: water quality changes with rainfall and season.
- Protect yourself from the sun: the shoreline is open; sunscreen, a hat and water are essential.
- Look after the environment: much of the region is protected. Take your rubbish with you and respect the restinga vegetation.
- Allow time on the road in summer and at weekends.
