Niterói packs an unusual amount of nature into a small area: rocky headlands over the ocean, Atlantic forest and lookouts facing Rio. Here are the best trails, from the demanding classic to walks that take minutes.
Costão de Itacoatiara
The city's most famous trail. It climbs the rocky headland at the end of Itacoatiara beach, with steep sections over rock and a reward that justifies every step: the ocean on one side, the beaches and the lagoons on the other. Allow 30 to 50 minutes to the top. Grippy shoes and water are essential, and it is best avoided right after heavy rain.
Alto Mourão and Pedra do Elefante (Serra da Tiririca)
Inside the Serra da Tiririca state park, these are the routes for walkers who want more time in the forest and a wide view over the ocean region. They are longer and less busy than Itacoatiara, so start early and check access conditions before going.
Morro do Morcego, in Jurujuba
A short, light climb to a lookout over the entrance of Guanabara Bay. It works well for families and pairs naturally with a seafood lunch in Jurujuba afterwards.
Parque da Cidade: lookout and flight ramp
The easiest of all: viewing decks a few steps from the parking area, with the whole Rio postcard in front of you. It is also where tandem paragliding flights launch, which makes it the only spot on this list where you can swap the walk for a flight. Details in what to do at Parque da Cidade.
Morro das Andorinhas
A moderate trail between Itaipu and Itacoatiara, with a view over Itaipu beach and the lagoon. It is a protected area with traditional communities nearby, so follow the signposting and respect the local rules.
Easier walks
- Parque da Cidade lookout — the easiest access of all, with the most iconic view.
- Morro do Morcego (Jurujuba) — a short, gentle climb to a bay lookout, good for families.
- Duna Grande / the gentle Camboinhas headland — flat seaside walks for anyone who wants nature without a climb.
What to bring and safety
- Enough water — at least a litre per person, more on hot days.
- Firm shoes with good grip, such as trail trainers; avoid flip-flops and sandals.
- Sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses, since most headlands offer little shade.
- A light snack, such as fruit or cereal bars.
- A charged phone and, if possible, tell someone when you expect to be back.
Best season
Autumn and winter, roughly April to September, bring drier days, milder temperatures and the clearest views across the bay. In summer, start early to avoid the heat and the afternoon showers. The same seasonal logic applies to flying, as explained in the best time of year to fly.
