Rio de Janeiro is known for its beaches and its Carnival, but the part that gets less coverage is that the state is one of Brazil's best destinations for ecotourism and adventure. Atlantic forest, mountains and sea meet within a few hours of each other, so you can climb in the morning and dive in the afternoon. Here are five tours that work well for visitors — with the level of fitness each one really needs.

1. Pedra do Telégrafo trail, Barra de Guaratiba

Famous for photos in which people seem to hang over an abyss — an optical illusion created by the angle, since the rock sits a few metres above solid ground. The trail is moderate, climbs Pedra do Telégrafo in Rio's West Zone and opens onto a wide view of the wild beaches of Grumari and Guaratiba.

Go early. The sun is strong there and the queue for the photo grows quickly at weekends. Bring water, sunscreen and shoes with grip.

2. Tandem paragliding, Niterói

This is the adventure that delivers the most sensation for the least requirement. On a tandem flight you go with a pilot, need no experience and no fitness, and your participation amounts to a few steps of running at launch. After that it is all landscape.

Rio has two reference ramps: Pedra Bonita, in São Conrado, inside the city, and Parque da Cidade, in Niterói, across Guanabara Bay. The difference is the framing: from Niterói, about 270 metres up, Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf appear together, with the city face on rather than beneath you.

  • From R$ 379 per person, photos and video included, no separate club fee.
  • 10 to 20 minutes in the air, with a soft landing on São Francisco beach.
  • Pilots registered with ANAC (RBAC 103) and certified by the CBVL, with insurance included.
  • From about 20 to 110 kg, which makes it accessible to accompanied children and older visitors.

If safety is the question, the honest answer is in is paragliding safe?. If it is fear of heights, read fear of heights: can you still fly?. To compare both Rio ramps, see the guide to paragliding in Rio de Janeiro.

3. Discovery dive in Arraial do Cabo

Nicknamed the "Brazilian Caribbean" for the colour of its water, Arraial do Cabo sits in the Lakes Region, about two and a half hours from Rio. The meeting of ocean currents keeps the water clear and rich in marine life, making it one of the best dive sites in the country.

A discovery dive is the format for people who have never dived: after a short briefing you go down with an instructor, with no certification required. If you prefer to stay on the surface, boat trips with snorkelling stops cover the same bays.

4. Rafting in Casimiro de Abreu

For freshwater and teamwork, running the rapids of the Macaé river in Casimiro de Abreu, about two hours from Rio, is a good first contact with the sport. The stretch has beginner-level rapids, the raft goes with a guide and the rhythm alternates busy sections with calm stretches where you can watch the forest.

It is one of the few adventures here that works well with large groups and families, because it depends more on coordination than on strength.

5. Waterfall circuit in Tijuca National Park

The largest urban forest in the world hides trails and waterfalls minutes from the city centre. The circuit taking in Cachoeira do Horto and Cachoeira das Almas is shaded, moderately difficult and ends at cold pools — the perfect contrast to the city heat.

As it is a national park, check visiting hours in advance and avoid days of heavy rain, when the water rises and the rocks get slippery.

How to build your adventure itinerary

  1. If you have one day: choose paragliding in Niterói. It takes the least total time and combines with sightseeing on the same day.
  2. If you have a weekend: pair the flight with a trail on Saturday and leave the Tijuca waterfalls for Sunday.
  3. If you have a week: add Arraial do Cabo and the rafting, which need longer journeys.
  4. In any case: give weather-dependent activities an alternative window. In Niterói, if the wind does not cooperate, rescheduling is free.

To concentrate everything in one city, Niterói gathers flying, hiking, surfing and stand-up paddle within a small radius — all of them in adventure sports in Niterói.
