If you are a guide, agency or inbound operator in Rio de Janeiro and you currently take visitors to fly in São Conrado, the short answer is this: Parque da Cidade, in Niterói, is an excellent alternative — not because São Conrado is bad, but because the two ramps solve different problems.
São Conrado is great — and busy
Let us be fair. The Pedra Bonita ramp, with its landing on São Conrado beach, is the cradle of free flight in Rio. It is iconic, it appears in every "what to do in Rio" list and it delivers a beautiful flight.
The flip side is exactly that popularity. In high season, on holidays and on sunny weekends, the ramp concentrates pilots, schools, independent tourists and groups from several operators at the same time. Anyone who has waited at Pedra Bonita with a group knows what that means for a schedule.
What Parque da Cidade offers instead
The Parque da Cidade ramp sits on top of Morro da Viração, about 270 metres up, on the Niterói side of Guanabara Bay. That geography changes the experience: instead of flying inside the scenery, the passenger flies facing it.
In a single frame the client gets Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay, the Rio–Niterói bridge and the downtown skyline — the complete postcard. For a guide, that is a ready-made selling line: "you will fly looking straight at Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf".
Beyond the panorama, the flight has the fundamentals you already know: tandem with an instructor, 10 to 20 minutes, passengers from 20 to 110 kg, no experience required, and photos and video included.
Comparison for the trade
| Criterion | São Conrado (Pedra Bonita) | Parque da Cidade (Niterói) |
|---|---|---|
| View | Flight inside the South Zone: Pedra da Gávea, São Conrado beach and open sea | Rio seen from the outside: Christ, Sugarloaf, the bay and the bridge in one panorama |
| Crowds | Very popular ramp; several operations at once on sunny days | Less crowded; groups handled at an agreed time |
| Schedule predictability | Return time depends on the launch queue | Time agreed with the school, 7am to 5pm |
| Van access | Known logistics, but disputed | Paved road to the ramp, with parking; landing in São Francisco |
| Cost to the client | Tends to cost more, with a club fee charged separately and images often extra | From R$ 379 per person, photos and video included, no club fee |
| Fit in the itinerary | Ideal for South Zone itineraries | Ideal when the itinerary includes Niterói, or as a plan B |
On prices, we deliberately do not quote figures for São Conrado, because they vary by school and season. What we can state is our own side: R$ 379 with images included.
When to choose Parque da Cidade
- São Conrado is full or the wind is unfavourable there. Instead of holding the group or cancelling, you cross the bridge and fly. The two ramps have different wind regimes.
- The itinerary already includes Niterói. If the MAC, the Caminho Niemeyer or the ocean beaches are on the programme, the flight fits with no extra travel.
- The client wants "the photo" of Christ and Sugarloaf — honeymoons, birthdays, international visitors.
- Groups. With an agreed time and a less crowded operation, it is easier to keep the group together and predict the departure time. Details in paragliding for groups and agencies.
- Late afternoon. Golden light over the bay, with the landmarks against the sunset, is one of the most photogenic flights in the region.
How the day works in practice
- Morning — crossing. Leave Rio over the bridge by van, or by ferry from Praça XV, with the group already enjoying the bay.
- Mid-morning — Caminho Niemeyer and the MAC. A photo stop at the museum with Sugarloaf behind.
- Lunch — São Francisco or Charitas. Restaurants facing the bay, minutes from the landing field.
- Afternoon — Parque da Cidade and the flights. Short briefing, tandem flights in sequence and landing in São Francisco. Those waiting enjoy the lookout.
- Late afternoon — beaches or return. Piratininga, Camboinhas or Itacoatiara for those with time; otherwise back to Rio with the sunset over the bridge.
The flight does not force you to rebuild the whole day: it anchors the afternoon at an agreed time, and the rest of the itinerary organises itself around it.
How to pitch it to the client
You do not need to sell "Niterói versus São Conrado". Sell the view: "you will fly looking straight at Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, with the whole bay below". The supporting arguments follow naturally: tandem flight with a CBVL-certified instructor, a school with more than 19 years of operation, a 5.0 Google rating, no experience required and a clear final price.
A positioning that works well with partners: present Parque da Cidade as "the flight with the view of the whole of Rio", an exclusive product in your itinerary, rather than a cheap substitute for São Conrado.
